Collie walked into crowded picnic areas, stepping on blankets, searching for her "Therapy Dog Patients" people who needed a dog hug. Collie lived to find affection from strangers. It was like air to breathe, it was the icing on her dog life.

I keep an eye on her from a distance. When I spot negative body language from those not wanting a strange dog to sit on their beach blanket I warn her via the walkie talkie clipped on her harness. (see the yellow thing on her side?)

"unh-unh!" I'd warn. Or "Collie, WATCH OUT!" - the command to get out of the way. Sometimes I'd tell her "Find the cash, girl!" to be funny.

Here (at right) the woman is reading her laminated tag that says "OK TO PET, OK TO KISS, OK TO HUG!"

When she receives a very favorable reception I someimes whisper over the radio "See if they'll pay your vet bills"

Tyler actually gets stressed from crowds like we encountered on the 4th. People's vibes - their energy - gets kind of weird. Many want to touch him, take photos with him, etc.

Tyler does something very special for me at the Warming Hut Restaurant. I stay outside on the mobility scooter with the collies while he (without any prompting from me) walks in the door when it swings open. Then he disappears in the crowded premises.

Within a few minutes he comes out with Margie, one of the workers, who asks what I'd like to order. Is that amazing or what?! Tyler KNEW I wanted to go in once, long ago, to get coffee but was tired. I debated the hassle of 3- leashed dogs in the crowded lines...when Tyler took the matter into his own paws.

Yes, he goes into the restaurant alone to get someone to take my order. And her name is Margie. And she's an absolute Angel about it. This time, the 4th July, 2015 I needed large bottled water for the dogs. Good job Tyler! Thank you Margie!

Wonderfully happy, joyful dog pal! This is why you want to socialize your dog. It is sad when dog owners run to grab their dog away when Collie trots up to sniff. Some have told me they think it is disgusting to allow dogs to sniff each other. Oh, well. Don't you be like that! Dogs live in a world of scent hundreds of times more intense than our own.

Milie says
"Yeah, get a shot of your guy
petting me. He pets nice!
No, I won't charge extra..."

Collie needs surgery to correct her joint problems
Collie has elbow dysplasia on her right side. By compensating with use of her left wrist she's developed a calcification of the ligamentous attachment tot he bone. You can see the swollen lump where her left paw is raised as she steps.

Because she's a slow poke I often give her rides on the floorboards of the mobility scooter.

Every day Collie takes an anti-inflammatory, meloxicam, and gets two large tablets of Dasuquin in her food (a joint lubricant). I also give her arthritis injections of Adequan every week or two.

Collie needs to be examined by an orthopedic vet but they are too expensive. One wanted $650 just to X-ray her for evaluation. Collie  already has 4 sets of X-rays, in the past, to diagnose her.

The reason I object to $650 just for an X-ray is that the vet wanted to knock her out with anesthesia, then stabilize her with IV fluids, etc. That is totally a rip-off! An X-ray cost pennies worth of electricity. The X-ray film costs $1 a sheet.

It is not necessary to use anesthesia to position her. She is a trained, highly intelligent service dog who will do whatever you tell her. They refuse to let me handle her in the X-ray room. But vets and vet techs only know how to handle pet dogs; ones that are not trained.

If you doubt what I just said then look up Cesar Millan's episodes of the Dog Whisperer where he teaches: 1) animal shelter workers, 2) a vet, and 3) a professional dog groomer in LA how to handle dogs without sedation or restraints.

But people who only know "Pet" dogs do not understand! They insist on treating a working dog such as Collie as if it is a little moron that has to be knocked out with drugs and/or physically restrained.

The world is full of ignorant people who refuse to learn that they don't know or understand something. Even if you show them they try to explain it away.

You just cannot
"teach old people new tricks!"

If anyone reading this wants to help Collie by financing her orthopedic evaluation and surgical treatment please email me. verne@matthewhenson.
